God does not change. He never differs from himself. All that God is has always been and always will be. The concept of a God who grows, develops, and matures over time is nowhere to be found in scripture. God created the universe’s life cycle, but he is not a part of that cycle. Unfortunately, it is human nature to judge God through our human understanding of personal and social development… our life cycle.
If we, through our extremely flawed ability for enlightenment, have a particular “epiphany” at a particular time in history that is counter to what God has revealed throughout the millennia, it is in our nature to argue with God, enter into open rebellion, and attempt to reinvent his Word to fit what we believe is the new and improved correctness. This is the nature of heresy, and it has defined man’s relationship with God for thousands of years, hence Adam and Eve getting themselves kicked out of the Garden of Eden, hence the need for corrective prophets, and finally the need for Christ to walk among us, suffer death for the expiation of our sins, give us a New Testament, and establish his Church.
Flux and mutation exist in a created universe, but God is not a created being subject to time and space. He is outside the tapestry of the universe’s existence. While we change and mutate along the threads of our existence, God is at the beginning and the end of all threads, immutable. We are his creation and he completely loves us whether we turn to him or turn from him. In turning to him, in turning from the Lie toward the Truth, we can begin to find our truest identity.
That we can change is a good thing, as redemption desires us to change and conform to and imitate Christ. The idea that God will amicably change and conform to our modernity is pure hubris and false pride. Truth will not conform to the Lie simply to assuage our fickle deportment. This is not God rejecting us. It is us rejecting God in favor of our own sanctimony. What Christ said about marriage two thousand years ago is what Christ says about marriage today. What Christ said about children two thousand years ago is what Christ says about children today. What Christ said about promiscuity and sexuality two thousand years ago is what Christ says about promiscuity and sexuality today. Truth is eternal. The teachings of God do not expire… they do not go out of date… and they certainly are not obligated to conform to any particular age of human enlightenment. Just as God Is Who Is, his Word Is What Is. God is constant. It is we who are inconsistent. All of mankind are flawed sinners. That is the truth.
Anyone familiar with Church history will know that since the Ascension the Church has had to fight against false teachers, false prophets, and heresies of all sorts through the centuries. Today is no different. Protestantism is more fractured today than it ever has been. Catholicism is being attacked from within and without. Governments once traditional supporters of Christian ideals are now openly hostile to Christians.
We live in a time where we are actually going to have to stand up and fight for our beliefs. God has clearly stated His terms, and now it is time for us to bring our lives into accord with his revealed will. Do not look on this as a burden. In truth it is a blessing. It is a time that will shake the dust of complacency off of many, reveal the heretical views of many others, and hopefully, through God’s grace, return many prodigal sons and lost sheep to the fold.
