Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoes anti-infanticide bill requiring care for born-alive babies – LifeSite

Election consequences continue to mount in the Grand Canyon State.

Arizona’s Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs has vetoed legislation to ensure basic medical care for infants who survive attempted abortions, with Republicans in the state legislature lacking the votes to override.

SB 1600 would have required “any infant who is born alive, including one born during the course of an abortion” to be “treated as a legal person” and given “the same rights to medically appropriate and reasonable care and treatment” as a child born in any other circumstance. Failures to comply would have been required to be reported to law enforcement, and violations grounds for suspension or revocation of medical licenses.

Curtis Means was born at 21 weeks of gestation July of 2020 and is the youngest premature baby to survive. Babies born prematurely at 22 weeks have a 28% survival rate. The rate is 55% at 23 weeks. 26 weeks improves survival rates to 86%. 28 weeks is at least 90%. Once a premature baby reaches 30 weeks there is a 99% survival rate. According to the CDC approximate 1% of abortions occur at or later than 21 weeks for a total of more that 6200 abortions in 2020. Arizona reported 1.3% or 169 abortions at or later than 21 weeks in 2020. While the CDC likely has the week by week breakdown of the 6200 post 20 week abortions, they do not publish the numbers so we can see how many 3rd trimester (week 28+) abortions are occurring.

Born alive statistics are not collected in the United States, so there is no way to know how many cases of infanticide occur each year. However, Canada does keep those statistics, and a country that is 10% of the size of America reported six aborted babies born alive after 29 weeks were left to die. Six cases of infanticide in viable babies. Six perfectly legal murders.
